OpenAI GPT-5.1: Finally, an AI That Does Not Sound Like a Robot

OpenAI's mid-cycle update focuses on tone, warmth, and customizability. Here is why GPT-5.1 feels different to use.

Just days before the Grok announcement, OpenAI quietly dropped GPT-5.1. This isn't a massive intelligence leap like GPT-5 was in August; it is a usability leap.

The 'Warmth' Update

The headline feature is 'Tone.' You can now set presets like 'Professional,' 'Candid,' or 'Quirky.' By default, the model is now tuned to be 'warmer' and more conversational. OpenAI realizes that for mass adoption, people don't just want smart answersthey want pleasant interactions.

Instant vs. Thinking

Similar to other recent releases, GPT-5.1 solidifies the 'two-model' approach. The 'Instant' version is for your quick emails and texts, while the 'Thinking' version slows down to handle complex coding or logic puzzles. The gap between 'fast' and 'smart' is officially closing.
